home theatre Design

This month I wrote a design column for Sotheby’s magazine Property Style featuring moody new finds for home theatres. Here are the pieces I found…

Low rider

The home cinema experience is all about comfort so you need furniture that both looks and feels the part. The Aspen Channel Leather Occasional Chair is a vintage inspired design with a wide, low profile silhouette you can curl up in, upholstered in black or tan top grain leather for a vibe that’s as comfortable as it is cool. $3195 from Coco Republic.

Cabinet meeting

Bring the kitchen to you with a stylish media room storage solution to hold snacks and drinks. This bar cabinet is cool and contemporary way to hide away bottles and glassware, featuring decorative detail to add some glamour, and an open frame which creates a sense of spaciousness and modernity. Wyatt bar cabinet, $6517, from SF Studio.

Light bulb moment

Creating the perfect media room atmosphere is all about adding layers of light including LED strip lighting for wayfinding, dimmable ceiling light, and mid-level light including lamps. This sculptural lamp was designed by Vico Magistretti in 1977 and is a regular feature in the world’s major design museums. Not only will your drinks and snacks be in view without lighting up the entire room, you’ll also be owning a piece of design history. From $1260, ECC.

Side hustle

Supplement tables are a home theatre essential to support human habits. Unlike a traditional side table, their lightweight steel frames can be easily moved around and they slide under your furniture for the perfect surface position – think a modern day take on a lap tray. This table features two planes connected through a graphic leg for a modern look and is available in a range of colours and finishes, and in a higher version. Relate side table, $959 from Bauhaus.

Make some noise

Feel like you’re at the game with this soundbar and speaker set that delivers every word of dialogue and every detail in the music. Ray works with your existing TV and streams music from all your favourite services, so your media room can transform from sport stadium to concert arena to movie theatre. It’s easy to set up and use, - you can control the experience with your existing remote, the sonos app, Apple AirPlay 2 and more. Add the One SL speakers to your home theatre setup for surround sound and in other rooms in the home. Sonos Surround Set with Ray, $1127.

Fully framed

I love the Samsung Frame to create a home theatre that is wow in terms of both sound and design. You get sizes up to 85 inches to fit your space, the slim fit mount sits tightly to the wall creating a clean design, and you can rotate the TV horizontally or vertically to watch all your favourite content however you like. The face transforms into an art piece when you’re using the room in another way, framed with customisable magnetic frames to suit the design of your room.

Set the mood

The power of paint is undeniable for creating a particular mood in a home. Your home theatre should feel cocooning without feeling black and cold. Resene Rockpool Green is a deep kelp green with the addition of warm taupe tones, so it looks dark and dramatic but still creates an inviting feel. Paint everything in the space including the trims and ceilings for that feeling of being comfortably enclosed.

Safe drinking

You want to enjoy a good beverage in your media room without any breakages. These sunset-toned highball tumblers are stylish and strong, made from durable and water-resistant polystyrene. Team them with a chic lacquered tray so you can enjoy your favourite tipple from with none of the risk! Set of 4 highball tumblers, $54.99 from Shut The Front Door.

Soft inside

If you’ve got hard flooring in your media space a rug is essential to create comfort and warmth underfoot and anchor your furniture. The hand-tufted Denali rug is a dark and moody neutral tone, however has a subtle change in heights to create a subtle artful pattern. Rug, from $4695, Coco Republic.

Store room

This stunning cabinet can be placed under your home theater system to store tech or entertaining items. Turned strips of solid oak have been lacquered then set into an elegant pewter metal frame creating a dramatic piece perfect for a darker room setting. Inside there are bevelled glass and saddle hide shelves, and LED lights for when the lights are down. Aylon storage unit, POA from ECC.
