A furniture fitout reveal
When this busy family of six moved into a new home, the dream was to start fresh with furniture that suited their life, style, and space. When you move home often the scale, proportion, colour palette and style of your existing furniture doesn’t fit the new space. In this case our clients were moving into a much larger character home, and they wanted pieces that complemented the style and scale, that were also stylish, durable, and made specifically to suit their layout and lifestyle.
A one stop shop
That’s where enlisting the help of a designer for a furniture fitout can really help - we started with spatial planning, recommended the number, style and size of pieces required for each room, specified every colour and fabric, took care of ordering, managed the logistics and looked after art and accessories buying and install. By having the freedom to create several custom furniture pieces, we could design every item to fit the scale of the rooms, flow with how the family moves through the home, and reflect their warm, modern aesthetic. The result? A house that now feels like home. Today we’re sharing some of our favourite custom pieces in this furniture fitout.
Our Favourite Customised Creations
1. The U-Shaped Sofa That Brings Everyone Together
In the main living room, the brief was clear: comfort, connection, plenty of space for six people, but also luxe enough for just the parents to escape and enjoy. We chose a generous U-shaped modular sofa, deep enough for curling up but structured enough to hold its shape. Upholstered in a textured, family-friendly fabric in a soft dove tone with button detailing, it’s ideal for movie nights, homework sprawls, or just catching up at the end of a long day.
2. The Curved Sofa for a Bay Window
One of the home's loveliest spaces was a quiet music room with a bay window, ceiling mouldings and beautiful natural light. Rather than force a bulky rectangular piece into this organic space, we commissioned a curved, low-backed sofa that hugs the window perfectly. The shape echoes the architecture and creates a soft, inviting nook for reading, practising piano, or soaking in afternoon sun.
3. A Dusky Teal Modular Sofa Made for Play
In the kids’ lounge, we selected a low-profile modular sofa in a deep dusky teal, equal parts cool and comfy. It’s the perfect mix of design-forward and totally kid-proof. We paired it with three custom made quilted poufs in calming shades of blue, green and grey that double as footstools, tables, or launchpads (depending on the child). A triptych of artwork by Michael Whitehead from Fine Print Co adds energy, and a curved black coffee table nest is a great shape for kids.
4. A Sculptural Oval Dining Table
For a family with four boys, the dining space needed to be equal parts sculptural, social and sturdy. This oval solid timber table has a lovely greyish stained woodgrain, and is anchored with powder-coated steel legs in a soft matte finish. It’s warm, tactile, and built to host everything from homework to family dinners.
5. An Oversized Curved Headboard for the Master Bedroom
In the main bedroom, we wanted to bring softness and scale. We commissioned an oversized custom headboard with a full-height curve, upholstered in a rich, textured fabric. This room has a stunning view over Auckland City but didn’t have much wall space without windows, so we placed the headboard in the centre of the room facing the view, creating a little hallway behind it to enter the wardrobe and ensuite. It’s now a standout feature that grounds the room and brings a boutique hotel feel to bedtime.
6. Herringbone Blues in the Music Room
To complement the curved bay window sofa, we had a pair of tailored lounge chairs in a blue herringbone fabric made — a subtle nod to tradition but with a contemporary shape.
7. Personalised Headboards for Each Child
Each of the four children have their own bedroom so we designed different custom headboards in different tones - ivory, natural, navy, and soft green. I like how this approach adds personality to their spaces and makes each room feel special and uniquely theirs.
The Benefits of Going Bespoke
A bespoke fitout isn’t just about getting beautiful pieces, it’s about solving problems, improving flow and function, and improving the experiences enjoyed in the home. Furniture is scaled precisely to your space. Fabrics and finishes are chosen to suit your lifestyle (hello, stain-resistant velvet!). And each piece is designed to last, both in terms of quality and style. For families especially, it means getting furniture that works, pieces that support the chaos, calm, and connection of everyday life, without needing constant replacing or rearranging.
